Risk Assessment

 

For standard sound & lighting rig.

 

Electricity at Work Regulations 1989

 

Potential Hazard: Failure of Earth connection to a piece of electrical equipment. Could cause equipment casing to become live - risk of electrocution.

Solution: PAT testing carried out periodically on all equipment to ensure all safety connections are sufficient.

 

Potential Hazard: Excess current to equipment due to supply faults.

Solution: Use of suitable fuses and Residual Current Devices (RCDs).

 

Items at Height

 

Potential Hazard: Lighting fixtures hung from raised T-Bar could fall and cause injury.

Solution: Risk minimised by use of Safety Cables, and a maximum T-Bar stand height of 2.5m.

 

COSHH Regulations 2002

 

Potential Hazard: Chemicals used in smoke machine could cause respiratory problems to some people.

Solution: Safe, water based fluid is used. Advance warning – prior notification of smoke machine being used.

 

LOLER 1998

 

Potential Hazard: Health problems for employees manually handling heavy equipment.

Solution: Weight of equipment measured and displayed. Equipment over 20kg must be handled by more than one person. Trolleys and dollies provided. Employees trained in safe manual handling.

 

Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005

 

Potential Hazard: Hearing damage including deafness and tinnitus.

Solution: Use of graphic equalizer to control acoustic output to allow loud music but with decreased noise levels. Strategic placement of speakers. Use of noise level meter to ensure that the noise exposure is kept below the following levels:

Bar Staff: 89dB

DJs: 99dB

Door: 84dB

Dance Floor: 104dB

 

 

Workplace Regulations 1992

 

Potential Hazard: Risk of tripping over cabling that is run along the floor.

Solution: Risk is minimised by taping cables to the floor and ensuring that they are placed in areas where it is not likely for people to be walking.

 

Potential Hazard: DJ Equipment blocking fire exits and emergency equipment.

Solution: Care to keep all exits and emergency equipment unblocked and easy to access.

 

Potential Hazard: Sequencing and strobing lighting causing problems to people with photo-sensitive epilepsy.

Solution: Advance warning of this type of lighting being used.
